lhex̲éylex

Illustration for lhex̲éylex - to stand up

Lhex̲éylex means ‘to stand up’. You can say Lhex̲éylex chexw! Stand up! as a command if commanding one person. If you are talking to two or more people, you would say it like this: Lhex̲éylex chap!.

There are also other ways of forming commands, and there is another (unrelated) word for ‘stand up‘ : xwílex.

Pronunciation

Lhex̲éylex sounds like luck-EH-lish, except that:

  • Instead of a regular l, the first l is the ‘hissy-l‘ (lh). You make this with more friction and no vibration in the throat
  • Instead of a ck, the first syllable ends in the Halq’eméylem hard-x sound (), with the tongue touching back to the uvula
  • The last sound is not sh, but instead is the Halq’eméylem soft-x (x), made by touching your tongue gently to the roof of your  mouth.
