kw’elōweqw

Kw’elōweqw is the Halq’eméylem word for ‘skin on the head’ or ‘scalp’.   Kw’elōw means ‘skin’, and -eqw is the ending for ‘on the top of the head’.


Pronunciation

Kw’elōweqw sounds like kwull-OH-ook, except that:

  • The first kw is ‘popped’, by combining it with a catch in the throat (glottal stop).
  • The final sound is the Halq’emeylem qw, which you make by rounding your lips and touching the back of your tongue to your uvula.
