Sts’élexw is the Halq’eméylem word for ‘quiet water’ ( ‘backwater’, ‘eddy’, or
‘slough’). The place-name ‘Chilliwack‘ (Ts’elxwéyeqw) comes from the same root as sts’élexw.


Pronunciation

Sts’élexw sounds like STSILL-ucch, except that:

  • There is a catch in the throat (glottal stop) after the  sts.
  • The last sound is the Halq’eméylem soft x.  In this case, you make the soft x with rounded lips.
