lhéltel

Illustration for lhéltel - canoe bailer

Lhéltel is the Halq’eméylem word for ‘canoe bailer’‘. Lhélt means ‘to sprinkle (it), to splash (it)‘ and the –tel ending marks devices and tools, so literally it means ‘sprinkling/splashing device’.

Pronunciation

Lhéltel sounds like LILL-till, except that the first sound (lh) is the hissy-l (like a regular l but made with more friction, and no vibration in the throat).
