Háwe is the Halq’eméylem word for ‘to hunt’.
Pronunciation
Háwe sounds like HOW-uh.
Audio: Elizabeth Herrling, Elizabeth Phillips
-ing form
Galloway’s dictionary records the ‘-ing‘ form for háwe like this (with a colon after the first vowel): há:we – hunting.
The colon would indicate that the vowel is slightly longer, with a falling pitch.
The Shxweli elders did not record this –ing form. Elizabeth Herrling gave hewháwe for the –ing form (audio here). However, the difference between the forms is subtle and hard to elicit; both versions are probably correct.
